Here is what happens if you don't prime -- paint dries but does not adhere to surface so it peels off.

Back to Home Depot. New instructions: lightly sand all surfaces with 400 grit sandpaper.

All the paint has been peeled off and all surfaces have been lightly sanded. Note that Home Depot acknowledged the mistake and provided a quart of primer and a gallon of red paint at no cost.

Newspapers placed on floor to prevent damage. Pavers will raise the book case off the floor so paint will not stick to newspaper.

Shelves will be placed on pavers. Also to prevent wet paint from sticking to newspaper.

Wash brush with water and hang so it can drip dry.

Glossy red paint prepared by Home Depot with primer in the paint (so no need to prime any of the surfaces.)
